The Story of Oliver Peoples

Oliver Peoples was born in the heart of West Hollywood, California, on iconic Sunset Boulevard, in 1986, when Co-Founder and Creative Director Larry Leight opened the doors to The Company’s first optical boutique.

Earlier that year, Leight discovered an estate collection of vintage American-made eyewear that included thousands of beautifully filigreed rimless and metal frames, including clip-on metal sunglasses produced by iconic American companies. All the frames were unworn, in mint condition, and in original packaging. He purchased the entire lot, which included a receipt signed “Oliver Peoples,” who he reasoned was the original owner or distributor. When he decided to sell the estate collection in the retail store, it seemed fitting they use the name. It was then that the Oliver Peoples vision was realized: to design a collection of eyewear and create a unique retail experience in a gallery-like setting.

The Company has maintained a classic yet innovative approach to eyewear from day one, presenting vintage-inspired frames that were a significant departure from the futuristic styles and geometric shapes dominant in the late 80’s. Because runway fashion was moving in a heritage rich direction, the debut of the retro collection was fortuitously timed, as the direction of eyewear changed globally.

Creative Director

Larry Leight was born and raised in Los Angeles, California.  With a passion for surfing and travel, he sought a trade that would allow him creativity as well as freedom.  With the encouragement of a family friend who was an optometrist, Larry earned a degree as a certified optician and began his journey in the eyewear industry.  As one of the first eyewear designers to be elected as a member of the CFDA (Council of Fashion Designers of America), Larry’s opinion and expertise in the field of eyewear design is sought after worldwide.  His designs and unique philosophy have influenced designers and changed the course of eyewear.

Each style in the Oliver Peoples collection is conceived and designed in the West Hollywood headquarters, taking inspiration from everything including films, books, travel, magazines and archival pieces.  Using Larry’s knowledge as a licensed optician, careful attention is paid to each aspect of the fit and balance if the frame.  The optical and sunglass collections include a range of styles from timeless, intellectual pieces with bespoke detailing to progressive, trendsetting fashion designs.

Hand Craftsmanship

Each Oliver Peoples frame is hand crafted with careful attention to detail, sculpting and perfecting the materials to achieve a balanced and refined final product.  The technically intricate process involves both state of the art machinery and the human touch, such as the individual hand-insertion of the genuine pins and plaques.  Each frame is tumbled and polished, and finally hand adjusted, carefully referring back to the original drawing created in the design studio in West Hollywood.

Frame Materials

Utilizing only the highest quality materials available, the collections offer a balance of acetate and metals frames as well as innovative and technically complex combination styles.

We work closely with our acetate manufacturers to create beautiful custom hues that are both wearable and flattering and take inspiration from organic, natural colours.  Shades of tortoises have become iconic to the brand as well as seasonal colours inspired by fashion trends.

Custom shades of metal finishes are inspired by the first collections which included variations of metal tones such as antique gold and pewter.  Titanium and beta-titanium combine lightweight comfort and durability for long lasting wear.
