Two new daily disposable lenses for astigmatism released

By admin on June 8, 2017

Rather excitingly for any of you who has astigmatism and wears contact lenses, two new daily disposable contact lenses for astigmatism have recently come to market. Like waiting for the proverbial bus “then two turn up at the same time” we have waited for many years for new daily disposable toric lenses to come to market. We previously had fairly limited options for patients wishing to correct astigmatism but also wish to wear daily disposable contact lenses.  We have excellent options in two weekly lenses, monthly lenses and custom-made lenses, but the range of daily disposables was previously very limited.

This year sees the launch of ACUVUE OASYS® 1-Day with Hydraluxe for Astigmatism from Johnson & Johnson and MyDay® toric from Coopervision. Both lenses are silicone hydrogel meaning they are made from the same breathable material as many of the 2 weekly and monthly lenses available.  This offers us the best of both worlds with the oxygen levels of a monthly but the convenience and safety of a daily.  Both lenses are available in a wide range of powers, so should suit most wears with a few exceptions.

What is astigmatism?

Astigmatism involves the cornea (transparent tissue at the front of the eye) being shaped like a rugby ball, rather than like a football. This will affect both your distance vision and your close vision.  It can cause blurring of our sight or even the appearance of double vision when uncorrected.

Astigmatism is very common, with around 80% of the population having a small degree of astigmatism.  If you have astigmatism more than 0.75DC you should consider correcting this error.  Contact lenses are an excellent option for astigmatism.

Why should I consider astigmatism contact lenses?

Depending on the amount of astigmatism in your prescription our optometrists will advise whether it is necessary to correct if you wear a contact lens. It is our belief that even small amounts of uncorrected astigmatism can limit the clarity of your vision, therefore we are keen where appropriate to always correct astigmatism.  We have a fantastic range of products in daily disposables, two weekly, monthly and custom-made contact lenses to choose from.

How do I try astigmatism contact lenses?

Trying astigmatism contact lenses is very easy. Simply make an appointment with our optometrists Craig McArthur or Peter Ivins.  They will then map your cornea using a sophisticated mapping system.  This allows the optometrist to find the astigmatism contact lens that will fit your eye best.
